The history of the Australian Labradoodle traces back to the 1980s in Australia when Wally Conran decided he wanted to create a breed of dog that, among other things, was allergy and asthma friendly, possessed sound temperaments and health and would serve as a great therapy and service/guide dog.
Initially started as what was a cross between a Labrador Retriever and Poodle, further development and selective breeding with other dogs was introduced by the Tegan Park and Rutland Manor breeders who took over where Wally left off. This breeding development continued over thirty plus years to produce the desired characteristics the research centers were looking for.
This perfection of the breed has produced the qualities that we see today in this rare dog breed; gentle, loving temperaments; athletic; beautiful curly or wavy fleece or wool coats; colors as exquisite as chocolate, red, apricot, cream, black, caramel and gold; highly intelligent; low/non-shedding; asthma and allergy friendly; no-odor and bred for excellent health and soundness. All are the qualities that endear them to us as great family companions that also doubles as a wonderful service or guide dog.
For these reasons and more the Australian Labradoodle puppy is a much sought after breed. The "authentic" australian labradoodle's lineage dates to the Tegan Park and Rutland Manor breeding centers in Australia, as what the decades of research and development done by the original Rutland Manor and Tegan Park breeding centers have achieved is greater predictability in size, coat, temperament, health and soundness of the breed. We encourage you to do your research on the Australian Labradoodle and look at the breed standard guidelines of the Australian Labradoodle Club of America at www.australianlabradoodleclub.us and the Australian Labradoodle Founders Association www.alfa-australianlabradoodlefoundersalliance.org for more detailed information.
